The Unusual Hero (Draft3)
Bombs are scattered everywhere. Many houses were destroy to ashes and the city is in a chaos state. Being an Indian Tamil, Vengadesh, the eldest, follow by Surya and Darshini, the youngest, were stateless. They were not granted the citizenship of Sri Lanka. “We’ve contribute so much to the country and this is what we get in return? Why are we not granted the citizenship of Sri Lanka? Why!” scream Darshini.“ We’ve been in the country since young and this is what we have? War? Violence everywhere? NO!”“You better shut up! Having citizenship is something we can’t decide on! Although we’ve been here since young, that doesn’t mean we’ll get the citizenship. Think about who you’re first. A Sinhalese? NO! We’re the Tamils!” Surya voiced out angrily. As Darshini was still young, she can’t stand her brother scolding. She bust into tears.“ So? Are you being racist? So what if we’re not a Sinhalese? We are still citizens of this country!” exclaimed Darshini with tears falling down her cheeks.“ Break it up!” shouted Vengadesh at the top of his voice. The whole room remained silence for a few minutes.“ Don’t argue anymore! What that has been done cannot be change. There’s no use arguing over the matter. Nothing can change.” Vengadesh broke the silence. As months pass by, they gradually forgot about the citizenship. 2 years later, the government shifted the Sinhalese to the highland districts, whereby the majority of the Indian Tamils live. As too many Sinhalese are concentrating in an area, government had them separated. As a result, many Indian Tamils were unhappy and they were driven out by the Sri Lanka army. The Sinhalese were offered homes and lands of the Indian Tamils. They were also armed by the government. Vengadesh, Surya and Darshini were driven out too, resulting them to be homeless. Therefore, they lived with their aunt. Their parents were died years ago due to the violence outbreak between the Sinhalese and the Tamils.“Thanks for providing us a shelter. I won’t forget your kindness.” Said Vengadesh, feeling relieved.“You’re welcome! Stay for as long as you want.” Replied Durga, his aunt.Vengadesh had to start looking for a job to support his younger siblings. His education was high enough to apply for in job in the government service. Soon, he was promoted. Unfortunately, in 1956, the government decided to make Sinhala the official language. Everyone in the government service are to learned it within three years, or be dismissed. Vengadesh struggled throughout the years but still did not managed to get hold of the language therefore he was dismissed.Vengadesh muttered to himself, “ How can they dismissed me? Now without the pay, how am I going to support my siblings? They’re still young to work.Surya and Darshini happened to walk passed Vengadesh room. They hide behind the door and peep at their brother. Darshini accidentally dropped a broom and Vengadesh immediately knew that both of them are outside.“Come in. Am I that scary that both of you need to hide behind the door?” said Vengadesh.“I shall look for a job to help you! How about working in the tea plantation site? Many of my friends work there.” Exclaimed Darshini.“I can look for a job too!” followed by Surya.“No!” Vengadesh yelled, “Both of you are too young too work. What if something happen to you?!” “We’ll be careful. Please…” say both Surya and Darshini.“No means no! No more please!” said Vengadesh angrily. “Go to bed now!”Over the years, they bearly had enough food to keep them healthy. Surya decided to get into a university to increase his knowledge, so it will be easier to look for a job. For the past few years, government had set higher criteria for the Tamils to get into university. After Surya took the teat, he did not manage to meet the criteria set by the government. He was angry and disappointed. Vengadesh learned about the news few days later, he was frustrated. Since then, he hated the government for the unfairness towards Tamils. With the help of his aunt, he gathered all the villagers and had a discussion.“I can’t let this matter rest just like that! It’s unfair!” Vengadesh blurted out.“You’re right! We’re not going to be bully by them forever!” Durga stood up suddenly and said angrily, banging the table hard with her fist.“I’ve come up with an idea! It’s killing two birds with one stone” let’s join the Tamil Tigers. We can fight against the Sinhalese and might even stand a chance to gain citizenship!” exclaimed one villager.“Are you kidding me?” Surya asked in disbelieve. “That’s a riot group. It’s an offence! We’ll get caught!”“We’ll just be careful.” Replied the villager.“Let’s us think about it.” Vengadesh told the villagers to give them three days to consider.Three days passed…“So what’s your decision?” asked the villagers.“Yes. We have decided to join the Tamil Tigers. We will fight against the Sinhalese and gain back our rights.” Exclaimed the siblings.“Good! We shall all join Tamils Tigers and fight against the Sinhalese till the end.” Shouted one of the villagers. This continues and when the dawn breaks out, streets are filled with riots. There is chaos everywhere on the streets and it goes on and on…
